Why we Don’t Offer Nutritional Testing—(And Why You’ll Benefit)

Updated: Nov 6

In the world of nutrition, it’s common to find a variety of approaches to supporting clients on their health journeys. One question that often arises is why we don’t offer certain types of nutritional tests, like food sensitivity or intolerance tests. And should clients be concerned about this? Let’s explore why here at Juliet Greenhalgh Nutrition we choose a unique path and how this can be advantageous.

As a Registered Associate Nutritionist, I follow strict standards to make sure my advice is based on solid scientific evidence. Instead of relying on tests to make diet recommendations, I carefully assess each person’s needs by looking at proven guidelines, talking about their lifestyle, and using my expertise.

Some tests, like those for food sensitivities or genetic diet test, don’t always give reliable results because they aren’t fully backed by science. Food intolerance tests are often not reliable because they lack strong scientific backing. Many of these tests measure antibodies, like IgG, in response to certain foods, which can simply indicate that you’ve been exposed to them—not that you’re intolerant or that they’re causing harm. These antibodies naturally develop when we eat a wide variety of foods, so high levels don’t necessarily mean there’s an issue. Unfortunately, these tests can lead to unnecessary food restrictions and even nutritional deficiencies if people eliminate foods without a real reason.

Nutritional testing can come with significant costs, which might not always lead to actionable insights. Some tests can even cause confusion, potentially identifying false sensitivities or deficiencies. At my practice we are mindful of these financial and emotional burdens and instead guide clients based on individual health goals, broader dietary patterns, and lifestyle factors.

This approach ensures that clients can make informed, achievable changes without the added stress of managing specific test results. By emphasising overall well-being and symptom evaluation, we focus on what truly impacts clients’ lives.

Rather than relying on test results alone, we prioritise a holistic approach. We use detailed client consultations, food diaries, and other tools to assess lifestyle, dietary habits, and health history. This approach empowers clients to explore and address their health concerns through personalised guidance tailored to their unique situations.

This focus on lifestyle and behaviour often uncovers patterns and root causes that testing alone cannot reveal. By examining clients’ eating patterns, stress levels, exercise routines, and even sleep, we support clients in developing sustainable habits that foster long-term health.

One of the main benefits of working with a Registered Associate Nutritionist like me is education. Instead of focusing on lab tests, we focus on helping you understand good nutrition, balanced eating, and healthy lifestyle changes. This way, you can make everyday choices with confidence and rely on your own knowledge rather than test results.

By guiding clients with knowledge rather than lab data, we create a more lasting impact, empowering clients to take charge of their health through informed, sustainable choices.

We are committed to staying up-to-date with current scientific research to ensure that our guidance reflects the best available evidence. As new findings emerge, we adjust our recommendations accordingly, prioritising clients' safety and well-being.

In short, we don’t rely on nutritional testing to help clients reach their health goals. Instead, we focus on understanding each person’s lifestyle, providing practical guidance, and sharing knowledge that’s backed by reliable science. This approach gives clients the tools they need for lasting health improvements, all without the added worry or expense of testing. So, if you’re working with us, you can feel confident knowing we’re offering advice that’s safe, effective, and truly focused on your overall well-being.
